RN to BSN Schools and Programs

Did you become an RN (registered nurse) through a diploma program or associate's degree? Ever think about advancing your nursing career? RN to BSN (bachelor's of science in nursing) programs are available for RNs who want to expand career opportunities and increase earning potential. These programs usually require an additional one or two years of study after you become an RN. To begin an RN to BSN degree program, you must:
  • be an active registered nurse (passed the NCLEX) and
  • practice in a nursing setting (outpatient clinic, research facility, hospital)
RN to BSN program coursework usually focuses on the following:
  • Leadership
  • Administrative skills
  • Critical thinking
Consider online RN to BSN programs, if you're unable to follow a rigid class schedule. Sometimes, hospitals or other health care settings will reimburse some tuition costs for completing an RN to BSN program. RN to BSN programs are designed to train you for nursing supervisor roles and charge nursing in a hospital; however, RN to BSN courses tend to focus on clinical time outside the hospital. This means RNs who hold a BSN may be competitive candidates for a variety of nursing careers both in and out of the hospital.

RN to BSN Career Outlook

No specific data exists regarding salary comparisons between associate's and diploma RNs and RNs who hold a BSN; however, RNs who earn a BSN usually enjoy more career advancement and better pay.
