To become an LPN, you must first complete a year-long training program, usually at a local community college. This training prepares you for basic nursing tasks:
LPNs often work beside an Registered Nurse (RN) or under an RN's supervision at a hospital, research facility, private practice, or outpatient clinic.
To enroll in an LPN to BSN program, you need an LPN license--earn this by passing the NCLEX-PN. From there, a LPN to BSN or RN program usually takes one to one-and-a-half years to complete. Typical coursework includes the following:
Upon completion, you can take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Online LPN to BSN programs are available and take up to two years to complete. Online classes are helpful if you want to continue working as an LPN while you complete the RN coursework. Because RNs perform advanced procedures and accept vast responsibilities, many health care institutions routinely hire more RNs than LPNs. With a BSN, RNs can become charge nurses, nurse supervisors, or staff nurses. Because LPNs have fewer responsibilities as their RN counterparts, they earn less. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an LPN's salary is about $25,000 less than an RN's salary.
